Charlie Chaplin body stolen after his death?

Charlie Chaplin was one of the greatest actors in 20th century. His "the tramp" character become the face of slapstick comedy and made Charlie Chaplin one of the cinema's biggest stars.

How was Charlie Chaplin body stolen?

In 1952 he moved his family to Switzerland, Charlie Chaplin, his wife Oona and their eight children.
25 years later at the age of 88 Chaplin died on Christmas day in 1977

He was buried in a 300 lb. coffin in a quiet ceremony. The whole world his passing.
Three months later Charlie's wife Oona got a wired call from Switzerland police. Her husband's body disappeared. After dark Chaplin's grave was desecrated. The heavy coffin had been dug up... and was removed from unguarded cemetery.

Indentations in the ground indicated that the coffin had been dragged for short distance then it apparently was driven away in a vehicle. The motives of the theft were not clear. 

Many rumors arose, like it was said that the body was stolen by Nazis. Who disapproved of the Charlie's parody of Adolf Hitler in the film "the great dictator"? Other insisted that the grave robbery was done by anti-Semites

In some days Oona got another call. The caller claimed to have Charlie Chaplin's body few days later she received a photo of Charlie's coffin the thieves demanded $600,000 Swiss franc to return the body. But Charlie's wife laughed at them and refused to pay. "I think Charlie would have found it rather humorous" said Oona Chaplin. The robbers negotiate the amount of ransom, they sounded every nervous. The value ended up dropping to $100,000 Swiss franc.

The police setup a ransom meeting as a trap but they arrested the postman by mistake and the deal was off. The thieves said that they would call to renegotiate the ransom at May 17 9:30 AM. Police tapped Oona's phone and assigned officers to watch nearly 200 booths in the area. The police eventually caught the criminals at a payphone in nearby Lausanne

the robbers were two auto mechanics named Roman wardas and Gantscho ganev.

Wardas and ganev were desperate because of their bad financial conditions. So they decided to copy a similar crime that took place in Italy.
The failed squad was charged with grave robbery and extortion. Wardas the reported "master mind" was sentenced to four years. While ganev got 18 months suspended sentence 

both robbers wrote an apology letter to Chaplin's widow. She only wrote back four words "look, all is forgiven" the great Chaplin was reburied in the same plot but this in case a tons of concrete. Ensuring his eternal rest will never be disturbed.
